We hope to resume HYL sanctioned Indoor Wall Ball sessions at some point in the future.
Until that happens, we encourage our players to take the initiative and find a wall outdoors or a solid basement wall to hone their stick skills and stay sharp.
Who: Kindergarten through 6th graders
What: Wall Ball is the repetitive throwing / catching against a spot on a solid wall. Our Wall Ball nights are "Drop-In" meaning players are welcome to come and go during that session to strengthen their stick work over the dark cold Indoor Season. If focused and used effectively, sometimes just 15 - 20 minutes is all they'll need.
Why: Whether a player is just learning to catch or they've been playing for years... this is one of the easiest developmental exercises that makes a big impact. It improves hand-eye coordination, speed of release, targeting (picking a spot), off-hand, and works out glitches in players mechanics. Common glitches to work out are snapping at the ball when catching, too much cradle before release, side arm or off the shoulder throws (should be over the shoulder).
How: Players need to bring their own ball, stick, goggles (girls), & helmet (boys). Boys should also wear their gloves but it's not required to participate if they forgot. They should find an area along the sides of the gym with clear space above the wall mats. They pick a spot and begin targeting that spot. The velocity should be at a level where the ball returns back to the player just above the shoulder to catch. If it falls short... throw firmer. If it whips by them... ease up. Experienced players should work their off-hands and quick stick. Developing players can count their catches for encouragement.
Rules: It's wall ball only. No goofing around for ground balls, no stick checking, no contact, no shooting, no targeting vulnerable parts of the gym (clocks, lights, windows, etc), no damaging school property, no roaming around the school (gym and bathrooms only), and only HYL players can participate under our insurance (no buddies, cousins, friends thinking about playing, etc.). As always, HYL holds our players to a high expectation of conduct and respect for monitors, peers, and facilities. Any reported behavior to the contrary will be addressed.
Parent Involvement: this is an uncoached development opportunity and supported completely by volunteer parent monitors. If we cannot attract enough monitors, these drop-in sessions will be canceled.
